Le Phi Long
Embracing both global and local preoccupations, Vietnamese artist Le Phi Long´s works aim to initiate conversations about the impact of humans’ lifestyle on our environment while questioning the effects of cultural shifts and collective pressures on the formation of a generation.
Le Phi Long´s works include drawing, site-specific installation, video, and photography. While his drawings originate from archival notes and illustrations, Long´s site-specific works record his native land’s History through landscapes. Indeed he sees human beings and their surrounding as a unified whole – a dynamic, multi-layered and multi-meaningful entity. The artist´s “interventions” – small gestures such as assembling, tying, grabbing, sweeping, removing, arranging textures, serve as methods to examine and uncover History.
With a title referring to the research work of the historian Eric Jenning, the series “Hunting as a metaphor of Political Power” belongs to his project “Đông Dương Lãng Du” (Wandering in Indochina). This project focuses on the history of catholic missionaries and the establishment of Western influence in Vietnam. From the historical and sociological investigation he conducted since 2016 in Dalat, Tay Nguyen, and then France, Long strives for deciphering and translating a piece of Vietnamese History and the components of Vietnamese identity.
By unpacking, connecting and re-interpreting old postcards and illustrations from hunting catalogs and archive pictures, this series focuses on highlighting the French colonial political plans through the metaphor of hunting activities.
