Hoang Duong Cam

Hoang Duong Cam graduated as a painter at Hanoi Fine Arts University in 1996 and is one of the most active contemporary artists in Vietnam today.

Fascinated with historical and psychological boundaries, Cam explores the complex mechanisms that connect the self and its surroundings. His conceptual work takes shape using a large range of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, video and digital photography.

Characterized by hearth tones and textures, his abstract series “Landscape with space between men” aims to relate the empty silhouettes between characters occupying a landscape with the landscape itself. The series were triggered by “The Great Wall Walk” – a performance by Ulay and Abramovic ; a piece of work confirming Cam´s feeling that in-between spaces separating protagonists could conceal even more meaning than their own body shapes.

Usually referring to historical locations (the artist´s process starts with an interpretation of historical archives pictures), “Landscape with space between men” works are visual reconstructions of liminal spaces or irreconcilable distances. They are also the expression of Cam´s deep interest in the Zen Concept of Koan, a meditative exercise intending to exhaust the analytic intellect, readying the mind to entertain an appropriate response on the intuitive level.

Hoang Duong Cam exhibits internationally, in solo and group exhibitions including Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan, 2018), SOMArts (San Francisco, USA, 2013), InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre (Toronto, Canada, 2012), International Video Art Biennial (Israel, 2010), Daegu Photo Biennial (Daegu, South Korea, 2010), Aichi Triennale (Nagoya, Japan, 2010), Jakarta Biennale (Jakarta, Indonesia, 2009), Singapore Art Museum (Singapore, 2008), Zendai Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai, China, 2008), Guangzhou Triennial (Guangzhou, China, 2008), ZKM I Museum of Contemporary Art (Karlsruhe, Germany, 2006), Singapore Biennale (Singapore, 2006), Huntington Beach Art Center (Huntington Beach, USA, 2005), among others.
