about O Gabinete

Created in 2021 by French-Vietnamese and Lisbon-based artist Sandrine Llouquet, O Gabinete de Madame Thao (OGMT) is a multi-faceted art space showcasing artworks by international and local artists. As both a community project and a full-fledged artwork examining the place of art and its contribution to society, OGMT aims to weave a tapestry of connections and perspectives through art while providing a platform for talented contemporary artists.

art gallery & a community project

OGMT was initially located in the bustling creative hub of LX Factory, Lisbon. As an extension to Madame Thao’s studio, the project was built around «paper» as a medium and concept. This first version of the Gabinete materialized three significant stages of artistic creation: Research with a bookstore corner, Production with an art supplies corner and workshops, Dissemination with art talks, screenings and mostly an art gallery showcasing works of local and international artists from Europe and Asia.

Since May 2024, O Gabinete has relocated to Campo de Ourique. This transition signifies a renewed focus on the art space’s role as a community project and art center. The project aims to redefine traditional notions of art consumption by blurring the boundaries between conventional categories such as “art gallery,” “artist studio,” and “artist-run space.” Through exhibitions and artistic events, talks and workshops, O Gabinete aims to become a platform connecting people of all ages and backgrounds through art: local and international, visitors and artists alike, professionals and amateurs, collectors and viewers,…

an art studio & artwork

Inspired by the concept of curiosity cabinets, O Gabinete de Madame Thao is a distinctive space that combines an art gallery with a multi-faceted artist-run studio.

Serving as Sandrine Llouquet’s art studio, it is also an evolving environment that grows and transforms through the creation of art, making the space itself an ongoing artistic project.

who is Madame Thao?

The name “O Gabinete de Madame Thao” reflects Sandrine Llouquet’s diverse influences and connections, encompassing her Vietnamese origins (Thao is derived from her Vietnamese name, Thu-Thao), her past residences in France and Vietnam, and her current home in Portugal (“o gabinete” meaning “the cabinet” in Portuguese).

A major contributor to the development of contemporary art in Vietnam by founding Atelier Wonderful and various art collectives, Sandrine then directed for three years Salon Saigon, a private museum in Ho Chi Minh City. Opening a new chapter of her life and work, she moved to Portugal in 2019 and opened the Gabinete two years later.

Sandrine´s work has been exhibited in numerous venues in Asia, Europe, and the US (Artfem Macau Biennale, Singapore Biennale, Shenzhen Biennale, Kenpoku Art, Ke Art Center, ARKO, VCCA, Palais de Tokyo, Le Point Commun, Fondation Salomon, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, The Mistake Room, …)
