In Mais-Que-Humano (More-Than-Human), Rita Pereira Marques continues her process-based exploration of environments populated by a series of mutable forms, situated somewhere between sculptures, objects and living presences. This exploration now extends into the realm of the “more-than-human”, a concept introduced by ecologist and philosopher David Abram, who, in 1996, set out to “remind us that the human world — with its culture, technology and creations — is only a small part of an infinitely larger world. A world in which we are embedded, through which we are traversed and upon which our existence depends: the more-than-human world that surrounds us, exceeds us and sustains us.”*

The artist advocates interspecies interdependence and explores post-Anthropocene communities of plastic forms through the creation of playful, strangely familiar ecosystems. Who are we, and what is this environment, if not a constellation of human beings cared for by the natural environment itself (and the plastic one, the artist would add), as well as by all the more-than-human beings that inhabit the Earth?

For the artist, a work of art is not simply a matter of translating an intention into form. Since forms are interdependent, they remain open: they can emerge, submerge, change, resist explanation and exist on their own terms.
